Non-Refundable Retainer

Category: lifestyle

The initial financial deposit paid to secure a vendor’s services for a specific wedding date, protecting them against lost bookings.

In the event industry, this is legally classified as a retainer rather than a deposit. Because a wedding vendor can typically only shoot or plan one event per calendar date, this fee compensates them for turning down other potential revenue lines if the client later cancels.

Common Examples

  • The photography contract mandates a fifty percent non-refundable retainer to permanently hold the October date inside the studio ledger.
  • If a wedding is rescheduled voluntarily, the original non-refundable retainer is typically forfeited, requiring a fresh booking fee.
