Cyanosis

Category: science

A physical sign where mucous membranes develop a blue or purple tint, indicating severe tissue deoxygenation.

Cyanosis is an emergency indicator. Healthy animals present with bubblegum-pink gums. A shift to a muddy blue tone indicates that the arterial oxygen concentration has plummeted dangerously, signaling critical airway obstruction, lung failure, or acute cardiovascular collapse.

Common Examples

  • The emergency nurse flagged a sudden onset of cyanosis in the choking patient, rushing the animal straight to the oxygen cage box.
  • Relying exclusively on cyanosis to spot hypoxia is dangerous; an anemic patient may go into respiratory arrest before their gums shift to blue.
