BCS (Body Condition Score)
Category: science
A standardized scoring matrix used to evaluate an animal’s body fat composition and nutritional status.
Veterinarians utilize a 1-to-9 scale (or a 1-to-5 system) to replace subjective weight claims. A score of 4 or 5 is ideal. A score of 1 indicates severe emaciation or muscle wasting, while a score of 9 points to extreme clinical obesity, which introduces long-term orthopedic and metabolic health complications.
Common Examples
- The practitioner logged a high BCS score of 8 for the overweight feline, detailing a strict calorie-restricted feeding plan.
- Palpating the ribs and checking the abdominal tuck profile from above are the two structural steps required to assign an accurate BCS score.
