Thinset Mortar
Category: infrastructure
An adhesive cement blend made of sand, cement, and water-retaining agents used to bond tile to a backing substrate.
Thinset is mixed to a smooth, pasty consistency and combed onto surfaces using a notched trowel. Modified thinset blends incorporate liquid polymer additives to expand bond strength and flexibility, preventing heavy tile from cracking when the subfloor naturally flexes.
Common Examples
- We selected a polymer-modified thinset mortar to ensure the large-format floor tiles adhere permanently to the concrete slab.
- Applying too much thinset mortar beneath a tile sheet causes the wet cement to ooze out through the open grout line channels.
