Taxiway
Category: aviation
A defined path on the airport surface used for aircraft to move between the ramp, hangars, and the runway.
Taxiways are the "surface streets" of the airport. Pilots must follow ATC instructions to stay on the correct taxiway, as taking the wrong turn can lead them into active runway areas—a major safety hazard known as a "runway incursion."
Common Examples
- We navigated the complex taxiway network, following the ground controller’s path clear to the main departure runway.
- Modern flight decks use digital taxiway maps to help the crew stay perfectly aligned with the assigned ground route.
