Starboard
Category: maritime
The right-hand side of a ship when facing forward toward the bow.
Starboard is the nautical term for the right side of the vessel. Historically, it derived from the "steer-board," as early ships were steered by a large oar usually mounted on the right side of the vessel to accommodate right-handed navigators.
Common Examples
- The captain announced that the coastal lighthouse would be visible on the starboard side within the next fifteen minutes.
- Starboard-facing suites are often priced at a premium when the cruise itinerary features scenic coastal views exclusively on that side.
