Spatial Audio (Dolby Atmos)

Category: electronics

An object-based audio technology that creates an immersive, three-dimensional soundscape by treating sounds as distinct objects in space.

Traditional surround sound relies on channels (e.g., 5.1 sound sent to 5 specific speakers). Dolby Atmos treats individual sounds (like a helicopter flying overhead) as independent 3D data objects, allowing an audio engine to place and move that sound precisely anywhere in a room's open space.

Common Examples

  • The home theater configuration utilizes dedicated ceiling speakers to map out a true 7.1.4 spatial audio environment.
  • Spatial audio tracking algorithms provide an immersive audio field even when downscaling to premium high-end headphones.
