String Inverter
Category: infrastructure
A centralized inverter that aggregates and converts DC electricity from a series of connected solar panels into AC electricity.
In a string setup, multiple solar panels are wired together in a high-voltage series (a "string"). The cumulative DC power feeds into a centralized string inverter. While highly cost-effective and easy to maintain, if a single panel in the string suffers shading, the output of the entire string drops proportionately.
Common Examples
- We installed a commercial three-phase string inverter to manage the heavy power outputs of the open warehouse rooftop array.
- A string inverter system is ideal for unshaded roofs, but it lacks the panel-level monitoring metrics that microinverters offer.
