MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking)
Category: science
An electronic optimization algorithm used by solar inverters to maximize the power extraction from a PV array.
Solar panel outputs shift continuously with sun angles, cloud shadows, and cell temperatures. MPPT dynamic-scans the electrical load characteristics of the string, continuously adjusting the voltage and current to keep the system operating at its sweet spot—the "Maximum Power Point"—to extract the highest possible wattage.
Common Examples
- Upgrading the array to dual-MPPT inverters allowed us to optimize power generation across both the eastern and western roof slopes.
- When a tree shadow hits a single module, the inverter’s MPPT algorithm realigns the voltage curves to prevent a total string drop.
