Shore excursions are how cruise lines monetize the time guests spend off the ship. They range from bus tours to snorkeling, and booking them through the cruise line provides a "guarantee" that the ship will wait if the tour is delayed.

• Booking a shore excursion privately can be cheaper, but you lose the guarantee that the ship will wait if your transit is delayed.
