Scrap Hulk
Category: infrastructure
A vehicle that has been stripped of all valuable parts (engine, transmission, glass) and is essentially a bare metal frame.
A "hulk" is the final stage of an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) before it is sent to the shredder. Yard managers track the arrival of hulks to maintain a steady flow of feed-stock for the shredding mill, balancing the volume of incoming cars against daily processing throughput limits.
Common Examples
- After our mechanics harvested the alternator, battery, and catalytic converter, the remaining vehicle shell was processed as a standard scrap hulk.
- Stacking scrap hulks efficiently in the yard requires specialized heavy equipment to prevent the frames from interlocking and becoming unmovable.
