Core Charge (Recycling)
Category: finance
A refundable deposit paid on an automotive part that requires the old unit to be returned for rebuilding or recycling.
Core charges ensure the "closed loop" of recycling. When a customer buys a new alternator or battery, they pay an extra fee. They only get that cash back when they return the "core"—the old, broken part—so it can be harvested for raw materials or refurbished for a second life.
Common Examples
- The salvage yard keeps a rigorous core charge registry to ensure every lead-acid battery sold is returned for proper environmental disposal.
- If the alternator core is missing its housing or is internally gutted, the customer forfeits the core charge payout upon return to the yard.
