Power Steering Pump
Category: automotive
A hydraulic pump that assists the driver in turning the steering wheel.
It turns "muscle effort" into "hydraulic flow." If the pump fails, you suddenly have to use all your strength to turn the wheel, especially at low speeds. It often makes a "whining" noise when it’s low on fluid or dying.
Common Examples
- The high-pitched whine when turning the wheel was the first sign that the power steering pump was struggling to build pressure.
- We topped off the power steering fluid and inspected the pump to ensure the steering assist remained safe for the driver.
