PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit)

Category: infrastructure

A specialized chip that governs the direction, sorting, and voltage scaling of power allocations across a logic board.

The PMIC is the "power conductor." It coordinates the startup timing sequence across all independent voltage rails, monitors internal chip temperatures, communicates battery state metrics, and cuts power immediately if it flags a downstream voltage or amperage surge.

Common Examples

  • The laptop refused to charge because the primary USB-C PMIC was damaged by an uncertified, high-voltage aftermarket power adapter.
  • Replacing a multi-pin PMIC demands precise hot-air air flow control to avoid shifting the surrounding passive surface-mount devices.
