PCM (Powertrain Control Module)

Category: automotive

The central computer that controls engine, transmission, and emissions systems.

The PCM is the "brain" of the drivetrain. It processes thousands of inputs from sensors every second to adjust fuel injection timing, ignition spark, and transmission shift points for optimal performance and efficiency.

Common Examples

  • The engine wouldn’t crank due to a failure in the PCM, preventing the system from signaling the starter solenoid.
  • Advanced PCM tuning can optimize a vehicle’s performance, but faulty module updates are notoriously difficult to diagnose.
