Belt Tensioner

Category: automotive

A spring-loaded pulley that maintains the correct tension on the serpentine belt.

The tensioner is the "tightener." Over time, the spring gets weak, and the belt starts to squeal because it’s slipping. If it completely fails, the belt falls off, and you lose all power. A good technician replaces the tensioner *with* the belt.

Common Examples

  • The persistent squealing at startup was not the belt, but a weak belt tensioner that was failing to keep the accessory drive system tight.
  • We replaced the belt tensioner as part of our comprehensive accessory-drive maintenance kit to ensure long-term, squeal-free operation.
