Settlement
Category: finance
The process where the payment processor verifies the transaction, collects the funds, and transfers the net amount to the merchant’s bank account.
Settlement is rarely instantaneous. It is a multi-step clearinghouse process involving the card network (Visa/Mastercard), the issuing bank, and the acquiring bank. "Settlement time" is the delay (typically 2-3 business days) before the funds actually become liquid cash in your operational bank account.
Common Examples
- We maintain a healthy cash buffer to account for the standard three-day settlement delay between the customer’s transaction and our bank deposit.
- High-volume merchants often negotiate shorter settlement windows to improve their daily working-capital availability.
