NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express)

Category: infrastructure

A communication protocol for accessing high-speed flash storage media via the PCI-e bus.

NVMe is the "super-fast lane." Older SSDs used SATA (the old HDD protocol), which limited speed. NVMe plugs directly into the PCI-e lane, allowing for speeds that are orders of magnitude faster than traditional storage, transforming boot times and file transfers.

Common Examples

  • For a modern system build, an NVMe SSD is the absolute minimum standard to ensure snappy performance and near-instant application loads.
  • Verify that your motherboard has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe protocols before purchasing your high-speed primary drive.
