Network Latency (Ping)
Category: science
The time delay, measured in milliseconds, for data to travel from a device to a server and back.
Ping measures the immediate "responsiveness" of a network link. While raw download speed determines how fast a massive movie file downloads, latency dictates how fast a real-time action occurs in smart home triggers, online gaming, or voice-over-IP sessions.
Common Examples
- The remote worker complained about high network latency during video calls, pointing to a severe upload bottleneck at the local ISP.
- We optimized our smart home automation routing layer to lower internal network latency down to less than ten milliseconds.
