Diode Mode Testing
Category: science
A diagnostic measurement setting on a multimeter used to check the health of a circuit by measuring voltage drop.
Unlike standard resistance tests that shift with temperature, diode mode sends a small current down a data or power rail to measure the silicon junction voltage drop back to ground. Technicians compare this reading against a known working "donor board" layout to rapidly find open circuits or partial shorts.
Common Examples
- Using diode mode testing across the display connector pins allowed us to instantly identify a blown data filter line.
- Diode mode testing must always be performed with the computer completely powered down and all batteries disconnected.
