MTOW (Maximum Takeoff Weight)
Category: aviation
The maximum weight at which the pilot is allowed to attempt a takeoff.
MTOW is the "hard wall." If the combined weight of the plane, fuel, cargo, and pax exceeds this number, the plane cannot safely generate enough lift. This limit dictates how much fuel you can carry, which in turn limits your maximum range.
Common Examples
- We had to offload extra luggage because the total load was approaching the MTOW limit on this short-runway airfield.
- Advanced flight planning software continuously calculates MTOW based on real-time factors like air temperature and runway elevation.
