Weep Hole
Category: infrastructure
An intentional opening formed in the head joints of a brick wall to allow internal moisture to drain out.
Water will eventually find a way behind a brick skin through micro-cracks. Moisture runs down the inner cavity face, hits a solid flashing line, and drains back out via weep holes. Omitting weep holes traps water inside the wall cavity, causing interior rotting over time.
Common Examples
- We inserted cellular plastic mesh screens into the open head joint weep holes to permit free drainage while blocking pest entry.
- The damp stains along the interior base drywall indicated that the brick masons accidentally choked the weep holes with mortar droppings.
