Checking

Category: science

A natural timber defect characterized by cracks that run lengthwise across the wood’s structural growth rings.

Checking occurs during the lumber seasoning process when the outer layers of a wood log dry and shrink much faster than the dense internal core wood. Checking is generally a cosmetic issue that does not affect a timber's structural compression capabilities, unlike a deep split.

Common Examples

  • The homeowner was concerned about surface checking on the main patio beam, but the structural engineer confirmed it was completely safe.
  • Deep checking across a structural load bearing element must be monitored to ensure the cracks do not split completely through the board thickness.
