Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD)
Category: electronics
A display backlighting feature where individual zones of LEDs are dimmed or brightened independently.
FALD splits the television’s backlight panel into dozens or hundreds of isolated grid zones. By dimming the specific grids behind dark portions of an image while maxing out the zones behind bright elements, FALD significantly improves the native contrast ratio of standard LCD and QLED screens.
Common Examples
- The budget-friendly display lacked full-array local dimming, resulting in a hazy gray appearance across dark cinematic scenes.
- Increasing the count of local dimming zones reduces the visual artifact known as blooming around white subtitle texts.
