Slow-Release Nitrogen

Category: science

A fertilizer technology that dissolves gradually over weeks to deliver steady, long-term turf nutrition.

Slow-release nitrogen uses sulfur or polymer coatings to wrap individual urea pearls. Soil moisture and microbial activity slowly break down these coatings over 8 to 12 weeks. This prevents sudden growth surges, eliminates chemical nitrogen burns, and stops nutrient runoff into local water tables.

Common Examples

  • We specified a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer for the summer application to maintain steady color without causing excessive clipping surges.
  • Cheap, quick-release nitrogen options give an instant green flush but completely exhaust the plant's root energy storage cells.
