Quartzite vs. Quartz

Category: infrastructure

Quartzite is a porous, natural metamorphic rock quarried from the earth; quartz is an engineered stone composed of mineral dust and resin.

This is a major client point of confusion. Quartzite is highly durable, heat-resistant natural stone requiring regular chemical sealing. Quartz is a man-made factory product that is completely non-porous and scratch-resistant, but can discolor or melt if exposed to direct thermal shock from hot pans.

Common Examples

  • The client selected a natural quartzite slab for its dramatic veining patterns, accepting the requirement for annual sealing maintenance.
  • Engineered quartz slabs are ideal for high-traffic rental properties because they resist acid etching from citrus juices and vinegars without effort.
