Ignition Coil
Category: automotive
An induction coil that transforms the car battery’s low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to spark the spark plugs.
When an ignition coil fails, the engine misfires (stutters). It feels like the car is "hiccuping" because one cylinder is getting no spark. Modern cars have one "coil-on-plug," making it easy to swap out the specific failing part.
Common Examples
- The P0304 code indicated a misfire on cylinder 4, which we quickly resolved by replacing the faulty ignition coil.
- Ignition coil failure is a common cause of poor fuel economy and the dreaded "stuttering" sensation during acceleration.
