Dark Pool (Alternative Trading System)

Category: infrastructure

A private financial forum or exchange that allows institutional investors to trade large blocks of securities anonymously without public exposure.

Dark pools do not publish an open order book. The execution prices are matched based on the National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO) baseline, preventing the public market from seeing institutional accumulation or liquidation until the trade is completed and reported to the tape, mitigating speculative front-running.

Common Examples

  • The institutional fund routed the block transaction through a private dark pool to avoid triggering a panic sell-off on the public exchanges.
  • While dark pools offer price protection for massive orders, they reduce overall public market transparency by obscuring true supply and demand matrices.
