eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel)
Category: electronics
An HDMI feature that allows the transmission of uncompressed, high-resolution audio formats from a TV back to an audio system.
Operating over high-speed HDMI cables within the HDMI 2.1 specification specification layer, eARC provides the necessary data bandwidth to pass uncompressed object-based audio formats (like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X) directly from a smart TV’s internal app stream straight down to an external AV receiver or premium soundbar setup.
Common Examples
- Ensure your soundbar is plugged into the dedicated HDMI eARC port on the television to unlock full Dolby Atmos playback formats.
- Without an eARC connection loop, the system will down-mix high-resolution cinema audio streams into basic compressed stereo formats.
