Hangar Rash

Category: aviation

Minor damage, such as scratches or dents, inflicted on an aircraft while it is being moved inside or out of a hangar.

Hangar rash is the "fender bender" of aviation. Even though it is minor, it must be officially logged, inspected, and repaired, as any damage to the aircraft’s skin or control surfaces can impact flight safety and airworthiness certification.

Common Examples

  • The tug operator was terminated after a case of hangar rash damaged the leading edge of the wing during a late-night hangar shift.
  • Repairing even minor hangar rash can keep a high-value jet grounded for days while the airworthiness paperwork is completed.
