Porosity
Category: science
The hair’s capacity to absorb and retain chemical liquids and moisture.
Porosity is governed by the state of the cuticle layer. High porosity hair has raised or broken scales, absorbing liquids rapidly but losing them just as fast (common in over-bleached hair). Low porosity hair has tight scales, resisting liquid absorption and requiring longer processing times.
Common Examples
- We conducted a porosity check by dropping a strand into water to analyze its absorption rate before selecting a chemical lightener.
- High porosity hair profiles absorb toners instantly, requiring the colorist to work rapidly to prevent over-saturation.
