GFCI Outlet (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)

Category: infrastructure

A specialized safety outlet designed to instantly shut off electricity when it detects an imbalance between hot and neutral currents.

A GFCI outlet protects human life from electrical shock hazards by monitoring current flow down to the millisecond layer. If current "leaks" away from the circuit (such as flowing through water or a human body), the GFCI trips instantly, cutting power before ventricular fibrillation can occur.

Common Examples

  • The electrical code mandates a GFCI outlet within six feet of any wet area, including kitchen counters and wet bathroom bays.
  • If your outdoor power tools stop working suddenly, check if the moisture tripped the upstream GFCI outlet protector line.
