Fuel Pump

Category: automotive

A device that pulls fuel from the tank and pushes it to the engine injectors.

The pump is the "pressure supply." If it dies, the engine gets zero fuel. Usually, it dies slowly—first, the car is hard to start, then it stutters under load, then it finally won’t start at all.

Common Examples

  • The hard-start condition and fuel pressure drop were the classic indicators that the in-tank fuel pump was reaching the end of its life.
  • Performing a fuel pressure test is the standard diagnostic procedure to verify if a fuel pump is failing to deliver the required flow.
