EVAP System

Category: automotive

A system that traps fuel vapors in a charcoal canister so they aren’t released into the atmosphere.

The EVAP system prevents your car from smelling like a gas station. It captures vapors from the tank and burns them in the engine. A "small leak" in this system is the most common cause of a random check engine light.

Common Examples

  • The P0442 code pointed to an EVAP system leak, which turned out to be a cracked rubber hose near the charcoal canister.
  • Proper EVAP system function is mandatory for passing state emissions tests, as even a minor vapor leak will trigger a warning light.
