TVS Diode (Transient Voltage Suppressor)
Category: science
A protection diode designed to divert high-voltage electrostatic spikes away from sensitive data lines to ground.
TVS diodes sit right behind external ports like USB or HDMI. When you generate a static zap by plugging in a cable, the TVS diode clamps down instantly, redirecting the thousands of volts straight to ground to protect the internal data hub controller chip. When they fail, they often short to ground permanently.
Common Examples
- The USB port stopped working because the TVS diode sacrificed itself during an electrostatic shock event, shorting the line to ground.
- Removing the blown TVS diode restores port function immediately, but leaves the downstream controller unprotected against future static shocks.
