Weatherhead (Service Mast)

Category: infrastructure

A waterproof, hooded fitting installed at the top of an overhead service conduit to allow service entry wires to pass down safely.

Also called a service cap, the weatherhead forms a downward-facing curve that prevents rain from entering the vertical service mast pipe. Electricians form distinct "drip loops" in the overhead service entrance conductors right before they enter the weatherhead, forcing gravity to shed rainwater away.

Common Examples

  • The commercial team secured the rigid galvanized steel service mast through the roof line, topping the pipe with a heavy cast aluminum weatherhead.
  • The utility linemen spliced their high-voltage lines directly onto our service entrance wires right below the level of the weatherhead hook.
