Grounding Electrode System
Category: infrastructure
A network of physical conductors buried in the earth to establish a secure electrical connection to the ground plane.
This system anchors the building’s electrical framework safely to the earth. It typically links a bare copper conductor to dual copper-clad ground rods driven eight feet into the soil, a concrete-encased rebar grid (Ufer ground), or a metallic underground water pipe to safely dissipate lightning spikes.
Common Examples
- We drove two structural eight-foot rods to complete the grounding electrode system for the new 200-amp service entrance.
- The master electrician bonded the incoming metallic water main directly to the grounding electrode system to satisfy local safety code mandates.
