Safety Disconnect Switch
Category: infrastructure
An enclosed, manually operated high-amperage switch mounted near heavy machinery to instantly cut all electrical power.
Also called an exterior disconnect or knife switch, this component provides immediate physical protection for service crews. It allows a maintenance tech to lock out power locally right at the HVAC condenser unit or motor site, ensuring no one can accidentally re-energize the lines from the main panel.
Common Examples
- The safety code requires a lockable, weather-proof safety disconnect switch situated within line-of-sight of the industrial elevator pump.
- The technician flipped the safety disconnect switch handle down and attached their personal lockout tag before opening the motor housing.
