Duty-Free Shop
Category: travel
A retail store located in the airside (sterile) area that sells goods exempt from local and national taxes.
These shops cater to international travelers. Because the goods are intended to be exported out of the country, they are not subject to the usual sales taxes, though you may still have to pay duties if you exceed your personal import limit.
Common Examples
- I picked up a bottle of perfume at the duty-free shop because the price was significantly lower than at the local mall.
- Duty-free shopping is only available to passengers who are cleared to board an international flight departing from that terminal.
