Periodontitis
Category: science
A severe inflammatory gum disease that damages the soft tissue and destroys the underlying bone supporting the teeth.
Periodontitis progresses from gingivitis. Bacteria spread into the gum pockets, triggering an immune response that begins to dissolve the jawbone structure. If untreated, it causes deep gum pockets, receding tissue, and eventually total tooth loss.
Common Examples
- The patient’s periodontal charts indicated stage three periodontitis, necessitating aggressive root planing and systemic antibiotic therapy.
- Reversing early periodontitis requires rigorous daily oral hygiene plus professional deep-cleaning sequences in the dental office.
