Gingivectomy
Category: infrastructure
A surgical procedure to remove and reshape overgrown or diseased gingival (gum) tissue.
Gingivectomy is indicated for patients with gum overgrowth (often from medications) or deep periodontal pockets that cannot be cleaned. The surgeon excises the extra tissue to reduce pocket depth, making the area easier to clean and improving the health of the underlying alveolar bone.
Common Examples
- The periodontist scheduled a gingivectomy to address the chronic tissue inflammation caused by medication-induced gingival hyperplasia.
- After the gingivectomy, the surgical site is covered with a protective dressing to shield the exposed tissue during the healing cycle.
