Delidding

The structural process of removing the integrated heat spreader (IHS) from a processor chip to improve thermal transfer efficiency.

Delidding is an extreme modification step. Technicians use a precision clamping jig tool to shear the metal lid off the CPU die. The cheap factory thermal material inside is replaced with liquid metal, allowing the processing core to dump its heat directly into the cooler block.

• Delidding the flagship processor dropped our peak under-load thermal metrics by an impressive fifteen degrees Celsius.
• Delidding carries an absolute risk of cracking the fragile silicon processor die, completely voiding any active manufacturer warranty.
