Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU)
Category: infrastructure
A specialized, closed-loop pumping and heat-exchanger system that regulates coolant temperature and flow rate throughout liquid-cooled server racks.
The CDU is the absolute heart of an AI data center's thermal management pipeline. It isolates the facility's primary chilled water loop from the ultra-pure, secondary fluid loop running directly through the sensitive server cold plates. CDUs utilize micro-controllers to programmatically balance fluid pressures, monitor dew points to prevent localized condensation, and scale pump velocity in real time based on fluctuating computational workloads.
Common Examples
- Our monitoring framework polls telemetry from the local Coolant Distribution Unit to cross-reference pump pressure drops against active LLM training spikes.
- If the CDU loses secondary loop pressure, the orchestration engine must immediately migrate active tensor workloads to a backup edge facility.
