CV Joint (Constant Velocity)

Category: automotive

A flexible joint that allows the drive axle to transfer power while the wheel moves up and down.

The CV joint is the "swivel." It has a rubber boot full of grease. When that boot tears, the grease flies out, grit gets in, and the joint begins to "click" when you turn. If you ignore the clicking, the joint will eventually snap, and the car won’t move.

Common Examples

  • The clicking noise during tight turns was a clear indicator that the CV joint boot had torn and the internal grease was contaminated.
  • Replacing a torn CV joint boot early can save the entire axle assembly from costly mechanical destruction.
