Standoff Isolation

Category: infrastructure

The physical and electrical spacing metrics that isolate a motherboard chassis from the metal computer case wall.

Motherboard cases incorporate brass standoff pegs aligned to standard screw hole grids. These standoffs ground specific reinforced grounding rings on the motherboard. If a technician omits a standoff or installs an extra one in an unaligned spot, the raw metal will bridge logic tracks, triggering a short to ground.

Common Examples

  • The system wouldn’t boot inside the case due to a standoff isolation fault where an unaligned peg was shorting out the rear traces.
  • Always verify that every installed standoff aligns perfectly with a reinforced chassis screw hole container to prevent voltage loop shorts.
