Catalytic Converter

Category: automotive

An exhaust emission control device that converts toxic gases into less toxic pollutants.

The "Cat" uses precious metals to scrub your exhaust. It is extremely expensive and easily ruined by an engine that isn’t burning fuel correctly (like a misfiring ignition coil). It is one of the most common reasons for an expensive "check engine" repair.

Common Examples

  • Driving for months with a misfiring engine caused the unburnt fuel to melt the internal matrix of the catalytic converter.
  • We recommend using an OEM-grade catalytic converter to ensure it meets strict state emissions testing requirements.
