VIN Etching

Category: infrastructure

A security process where the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is permanently etched into the vehicle’s glass surfaces.

VIN etching is intended to deter theft (thieves avoid cars with etched parts as they are harder to part out). Dealers often charge hundreds for this, even though do-it-yourself etching kits cost roughly twenty dollars. It is a common high-margin product pushed in the finance office.

Common Examples

  • The F&I manager tried to upsell us on VIN etching, but we declined the service because our insurance already includes comprehensive theft coverage.
  • If VIN etching is already installed on the car before you negotiate, try to get the fee removed or credited entirely from the contract.
