Platform Sharing (Modular Architecture)
Category: business
The practice where multiple vehicle brands under the same parent company share the same fundamental engineering chassis.
Platform sharing drives massive economies of scale. For example, a luxury brand and a mass-market brand might share the same floor pan, suspension geometry, and powertrain engine mounts, while utilizing different exterior "top-hat" body panels and interior touchpoints to distinguish the retail price.
Common Examples
- Platform sharing allows the automaker to distribute the massive R&D cost of the new electric architecture across four different vehicle brands.
- While the chassis is identical, the luxury brand’s platform sharing includes proprietary air suspension tuning to distinguish it from its mainstream sibling.
