Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT)
Category: travel
A scanning device that creates a generic human-body image to detect non-metallic threats.
Also called AIT or millimeter-wave scanners, these devices detect objects concealed underneath clothing that metal detectors cannot see (like plastics or liquids). It provides a generic, privacy-compliant outline for the officer to inspect.
Common Examples
- The body scanner flagged an anomaly near the passenger’s waistband, necessitating a focused pat-down by the screening officer.
- Passengers are required to stand with their feet apart and hands raised to ensure the body scanner can create an accurate baseline image.
