Genesis Block
Category: infrastructure
The very first block of the Bitcoin blockchain, which serves as the foundation for the entire ledger.
The Genesis Block (Block 0) was mined by Satoshi Nakamoto on January 3, 2009. It is hardcoded into the Bitcoin software and contains a message referencing a newspaper headline, serving as both a timestamp and a symbolic declaration of the network’s purpose as an alternative to traditional banking.
Common Examples
- The Genesis Block is the only block in the entire chain that does not reference a parent block hash, marking the absolute start of the network.
- All subsequent blocks in the Bitcoin protocol derive their validity from the cryptographic chain tracing back to the original Genesis Block.
